Optimise your connection speed
The first time you connect to the Internet with your new ADSL modem, you may find that you are not surfing or downloading at the rate that you had hoped the connection would give you. This page will provide information on how to determine your connection speed and how to optimise your system configuration.
What speed are you really getting?
In order to determine your current speed on Broadband click here and then run the speed test. The test will then return a bandwidth reading and a graphical comparison of your speed in context with Tiscali Broadband product speeds. This test must be run at least three times to ensure no anomalous results occur by clicking on Retest at the bottom of the page.
What speed should you be getting?
The smallest unit of data on your computer is called a bit (short for binary digit) and these are grouped in manageable multiples of 8, known as bytes.
With a broadband connection running at 512 kilobits per second (kb/s), the number of bytes you would receive when downloading would be calculated as follows:
512000 bits / 8 = 64000 bytes i.e.64 kiloBytes (kB)
